Slashed flight numbers are set to be the new normal for Geraldton, with Qantas confirming it will continue its reduced schedule until March.

Qantas will now run two return flights between Geraldton and Perth on Mondays and Fridays, and a single return flight on every other day.

City of Greater Geraldton chief executive Ross McKim said the move would tarnish the airline's reputation.

"This is really disappointing and will impact the local economy and Qantas' brand," he said.

The announcement follows months of inconsistent flight schedules that have affected the Midwest community.

The council's director of corporate and commercial services, Paul Radalj, said the lack of flights had a ripple effect on many sectors in Geraldton.

"We know it does impact these industries, especially the health sector, along with local businesses and FIFO," he said.

In June, the airline announced it would temporarily cut back on some regional WA flight routes, including Geraldton, due to the impact of COVID staffing levels.

However, four months on flights are still being affected.

"Like many airlines, we're taking a cautious approach to our network capacity across the country," A Qantas spokesperson said.

Mr Radalj said the city hoped the flight times would revert back to full capacity.

"While it is an improvement to the existing schedule, we are disappointed as we were hoping that the schedule would return to same-day travel for all weekdays," he said.

Qantas said in September only two flights were cancelled between Geraldton and Perth.

"The new schedule has seen our operational performance improve significantly with cancellation rates falling in recent months," a spokesperson said.

The council said it had made contact with other airlines and was open to working with them if the opportunity arose.

However, Virgin Australia said it did not intend to bring its service back to Geraldton after cancelling the route in 2019.

"There are no current plans for re-entry in Geraldton," a spokesperson said.
