A stack of unopened Christmas presents is all this mother and father have left to remember their 10-year-old son.

The Indigenous boy, who was under the care of the WA Department of Communities, died by suicide on Saturday at the home of a family member.

"The department had plans for us all to get together for Christmas," the boy's father told the ABC.

"Only one child showed up, so we ended up coming home with all the Christmas presents that we got for all of the kids."

He said the department put their son in child protection after the family was kicked out of their home during the COVID pandemic because they couldn't afford the rent.
