Investigations have confirmed an explosion in a Western Sydney home that killed one person and injured five others earlier this month was caused by gas, sources have told the ABC.
Police have called in experts from interstate as they investigate the exact cause of the explosion at Waikanda Crescent, Whalan, which led to the collapse of four other units in the townhouse complex on June 1.
Sources have told ABC News their investigation has confirmed it was a gas explosion, but they are yet to confirm the source of the gas.
Mhey Yumol Jasmin, 30, was unaccounted for following the explosion and rescue crews delicately sifted through the rubble looking for her in the aftermath of the blast.
Her body was recovered from underneath the rubble a day and a half later.
Windows in homes several streets away cracked, or blew in with the force of the explosion, and the scene was described as "confronting" for emergency service personnel.
Police are investigating if gas may have built up in the walls over time and are awaiting an examination from an expert in the field in the coming weeks, sources say.
Residents have since reported they had been complaining about the smell of gas near the site in the days and weeks before the blast.
The block of houses is owned by the state government and used as residential housing for seniors.
"On two previous instances, there had been issues around the smell of gas on the gas meter that's at the front of the property," Ms Jackson said.
"They were quite promptly responded to."
Ms Jackson said some components were replaced and records appeared to show the matter was resolved.
On Wednesday, Ms Jackson said the government had not yet received any updates from NSW Police on the cause of the explosion.
"We're extremely keen … take control of the site again and start being able to plan for the future," she said.
The minister said she remained confident that contractors conducting maintenance on the site did follow up on all issues raised over the months and years leading up to the explosion.
Police are preparing a report on the explosion for the coroner.
