A 26-year-old man has faced court accused of stealing more than $60,000 from a fundraising campaign for the family of an allegedly murdered Victorian woman, Hannah McGuire.
Lachlan Morganti, 26, was charged with theft offences last month after he allegedly swindled the funds from the online campaign.
The fundraiser was launched for Ms McGuire's family after the body of the 23-year-old teacher's aide was found in a burnt-out car at Scarsdale, near Ballarat, in April.
Her former partner has since been charged with her murder.
Mr Morganti, from Winter Valley, appeared in person at the Ballarat Magistrates Court today for mention.
The 26-year-old was joined by supporters in the courtroom.
The court heard the preliminary brief for the matter, prepared by the police prosecution, was ready, but details of the brief were not disclosed.
According to charge sheets seen by the ABC, Mr Morganti allegedly stole $64,541.75 from the online fundraiser between April 25 and April 30, 2024.
The charge sheets stated the funds belonged to Debbie McGuire, Hannah McGuire's mother.
Mr Morganti's legal representation applied for the matter to be adjourned, which was granted.
The accused's bail was extended and he will return to court on July 1.
Outside court, Mr Morganti remained silent when he was questioned by the media about the theft accusation.
Organisers of the fundraiser for Ms McGuire's family took to social media at the start of this month to announce donors would be refunded without having to make a claim to GoFundMe.
"Donations can be made directly to the McGuire family. Thankyou for supporting this beautiful family at a very sad time," the post read.
Earlier it was believed that donors would have to make an individual claim to the fundraising platform to have money refunded.
