A man has been arrested after four officers and a police dog were allegedly assaulted in an incident on a chartered bus on Saturday morning.

SA Police said patrols were called to Franklin Street, Adelaide, about 5:45am on Saturday after reports an intoxicated man boarded a chartered coach loaded with passengers and attempted to drive it away.

Police said the man was in an agitated state when patrols arrived and refused to leave the bus.

Police allege two officers were repeatedly punched to the head while attempting to remove the man, and capsicum spray was unsuccessfully used as the man continued to attempt to drive the bus.

"Officers arrived on scene to assist and a third member was kicked to the head and he suffered a split lip," SA Police said in a statement.

"PD Edge was called in to assist with removing the man from the bus, but he was also assaulted, and his handler was punched in the face."

The man was tasered but could not be removed from the bus seat, before capsicum spray was used a second time and he was eventually removed and arrested, police say.

Chief Inspector Ben Spencer said it was a tough situation for police to handle.

"The uniqueness of it made it very difficult for the police, trying to deal with a male in very close confines on a bus, while considering the safety of the public who are on the bus, and the real risk that if he was to take that bus away, what could potentially happen," he said.

"There's real concern there about what potentially could happen, and I think their actions are outstanding to resolve it the way they did."

He said police dog Edge was punched and kicked, before he retreated but was now home recovering with his handler.

A 28-year-old Adelaide man was taken to hospital to be medically assessed and police said he was likely to be charged with assaulting an emergency worker, attempt illegal use and resisting arrest.

Two officers were taken to hospital for treatment, but have since been released and were recovering at home.

Chief Inspector Spencer said some of the 26 passengers had "very mild impact" from capsicum spray, while one required decontamination with water.

A spokesperson from the bus company, Grants Coachlines, told the ABC on Saturday morning that the tour had departed for the Flinders Ranges.
