A man has died in hospital after being assaulted in Melbourne's CBD earlier this week.
The 44-year-old man from Seddon, in Melbourne's inner west, was walking along Elizabeth Street near Flinders Street station on Wednesday evening when he was approached by a man who struck him in the head.
The victim was rushed to hospital with significant head injuries.
He died on Saturday.
Homicide Squad detectives have been conducting a "significant search" for Todd Menegaldo in the days since the assault.
Police say he is known by the nickname 'Rooster' and has a black and white crossbreed Staffordshire terrier.
He is described as being approximately 180-185cm tall and of thin build.
He is known to frequent the CBD area around Elizabeth Street and Flinders Street railway station, as well as Mildura and Bendigo.
He was last seen wearing a zip up purple jumper, dark jeans and a yellow beanie.
