Two women have died and a third is in hospital after an apparent hit-and-run in Darwin's northern suburbs.

NT Police Force Watch Commander Tim Healey said three female pedestrians were struck on Trower Rd in Brinkin, near Casuarina Beach, shortly after 1:30am on Thursday.

Police and St John Ambulance crews attended the scene where two women, aged 62 and 47, were pronounced dead.

A third victim was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital and is believed to be responsive.

"It looks like the offending vehicle fled the area," Commander Healey said.

"We're still in the investigation stage."

Commander Healey said a crime scene remained in place on Thursday morning.

"There may be some traffic delays that go along with that," he said.

A police statement released later on Thursday morning said Major Crash detectives were speaking to witnesses as they continued to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage from the area to contact 131 444.

The double fatality brings the NT's road toll to 56 so far this year — more than double the 26 lives lost at the same point last year.

Of the 56 deaths on territory roads this year, 14 were pedestrians.
