Police are investigating the death of a child who was found in a car in Far North Queensland Monday afternoon.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called for a welfare check for a toddler girl in a car on Rankin Street in Innisfail, roughly 90 kilometres south of Cairns, at about 1:00pm.

The little girl was taken to Innisfail Hospital in a life-threatening condition, where she was later declared deceased.

Temperatures in Innisfail hit a top of just over 30 degrees Celsius at 12:30pm.

Cassowary Coast mayor Teresa Millwood said the community was reeling at the news.

"It is an absolute shock to the community," she said.

"The Cassowary Coast regional council would like to extend our condolences to the family involved and if there's anything we can do, we are happy to help them.

"It's a very tragic event."

Premier David Crisafulli said the government "stands at the ready" to support the community.

"Our hearts are with the Innisfail community as they grapple with this tragedy," he said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, and anyone with information is urged to contact police.
