A multi-agency search is underway for a teenage boy at a beach on the New South Wales Central Coast.
Emergency services were called to North Avoca Beach around 3pm, following reports a 15-year-old boy was missing in the water.
The teen was reportedly swept from rocks.
Two helicopters have been circling the area, while police, ambulance and surf lifesavers are also involved in the search.
In a statement, Surf Lifesaving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce urged people to think twice before taking risks near water, with several major incidents on Christmas Eve.
"We're already seeing these major incidents come through, which are devastating for many families at this time of year," he said.
"The coastal drowning toll since July 1 is currently 17 and we don't want to see this number climb over this Christmas period."
Hazardous conditions
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jiwon Park said a warning for hazardous surf conditions had been issued for the Hunter, Central Coast, Sydney and the Illawarra.
"Powerful southerly swells are causing some hazardous surf conditions ... we may expect about 2-3 metres of powerful swells, increasing to about 3-4 metres offshore," he said.
NSW Police and the Marine Area Command have advised people to consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
