MOVE over Irwin family, there’s a new wildlife warrior in town.
Teenager Oli Wardrope has, in quintessential Queensland style, shirtlessly wrangled a snake from under a ute, with barely a flicker of fear.
All before heading off for school.
In a Facebook video that is quickly gaining traction online, the teen has been captured removing a massive carpet python from under a ute in his home town of Seventeen Seventy, on the central Queensland coast.
In the video, posted by Yogi McDougall with the caption, “Oli the snake boy wrangles a carpet snake caught up under a (Land) Cruiser before going to school,” the teen can be first seen lying under the ute, with his hands wrapped around the python.
“I won’t be able to get him by the head,” the teen says from underneath the vehicle to another man watching on.
“Oh, oh, he’s coming out now,” the schoolboy says, as the snake begins to move. “He’s loosened up now.”
“He’s not liking that, he’s not liking that,” the man lying nearby says.
“I got his head, I got his head, I got his head,” Oli says to him.
“Here he comes,” the man says as Oli races to slide out from under the ute, while still clutching the snake by the head.”
The teen then wriggles out from underneath the ute, still clutching the snake, as another man nearby holds a bag for him to put it in.
“That’s a big snake” the man exclaims, as the bag closes around the slithering visitor.
The video has drawn widespread admiration for the youngster, with one man describing him as a “young Steve Irwin” and another praising him as “a little unit.”
Olis’ father, Chazza Wardrope, also joined in the admiration.
“That’s my boy! Been wrangling snakes since he was 5!” he said.
In another, tagging Oli’s mum, he said it was “just a morning before school for him”.
