THE Liberal National Party has confirmed it will not support bills to decriminalise abortion in Queensland.
Independent MP Rob Pyne has introduced two bills that want to reform the criminal code to remove abortion as an offence.
Concerns have been raised that if only one is passed it could leave women and their doctors in legal limbo.
Opposition leader Tim Nicholls said in a statement every one of his MPs decided not to support the second bill during a party room meeting on Monday.
“The first Bill left the entire area of abortion unregulated and this was clearly untenable,” Mr Nicholls said.
“The second Bill attempts to correct the failures of the first Bill but falls well short.”
The decision means the bills are now likely to fail, with Labor allowing its members a conscience vote and most of the crossbenchers except for Mr Pyne also not supporting the bills.
If the bills do fail, the issue won’t be able to be dealt with again until after the next state election, due by early next year, because of parliamentary rules preventing bills on the same issue from being introduced in the same term.
Abortion is the only medical procedure to feature in Queensland’s criminal code, however it has been amended several times since 1899 to allow the procedure in certain cases.
