As you are probably now aware, Oscars presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway called out the wrong winner for the best picture award yesterday at the Academy Awards.

Oscars officials are now investigating the embarrassing mix-up, which eventually saw coming-of-age drama Moonlight awarded best picture after the gong was originally being presented to romantic musical La La Land.

It is understood Beatty was handed the wrong envelope, which contained the name of best actress winner — La La Land winner Emma Stone.

But who are the people behind the controversy?

Beatty, Dunaway go way back

The Oscars was not the first time Beatty and Dunaway had starred together in Hollywood.

In fact, their appearance on stage at the Academy Awards marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the film, Bonnie and Clyde.

The pair played the infamous crime duo in the iconic 1967 movie, which was nominated for 10 Oscars.

The 'Prince of Hollywood'

For those of you who may be too young to know, Warren Beatty is regarded as one of the most famous actors of the twentieth century.

As well as starring in Bonnie and Clyde, Beatty is also known for his roles in Splendor in the Grass and Dick Tracy.

Throughout his 60-year career, Beatty has also assumed the role of director, screenwriter and producer.

The Prince of Hollywood is one of only two people to have received an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nomination for actor, director, writer and producer of the same film — only Orson Welles can also claim that feat.

Beatty has 14 Oscar nominations and won the best director award in 1981 for Reds.

And he was a bit of a ladies' man, having been connected to a string of Hollywood starlets including Diane Sawyer, Elle Macpherson, Madonna, Germaine Greer and Diane Keaton.

Beatty has been married to actress Annette Bening since 1992 and his sister is fellow silver screen legend Shirley MacLaine

Faye Dunaway

The American actress has an Oscar, three Golden Globes and a BAFTA and has starred in films including The Thomas Crown Affair, Network (her Academy Award-winning role), The Happening, Chinatown and Rebecca.

She also memorably played the role of Joan Crawford in the controversial biopic Mommie Dearest, which was based on the memoirs of Crawford's daughter Christina.

Dunaway has since revealed that she wished she had not participated in the film.

One of Dunaway's recent roles was an appearance on Grey's Anatomy.

She played Seattle Grace's first female surgeon Dr Margaret Campbell.
