A MASSIVE rescue operation is underway after many skiers were swept away by an avalanche at a ski resort in the French Alps.

A police spokesman, quoted by local newspaper Le Dauphine, said several people were buried by the avalanche that came down on an intermediate-level ski slope at Tignes ski resort.

The resort, which is in the Savoie department in the Alps in South Eastern France, has been closed as rescue workers try to locate the skiers, resort press officer Alyse Zajackowski told CNN.

Last month, three members of the same family and their snowboard instructor died in an avalanche near the same resort.
