THE Mosman home of former architect Bill Payne has sold at auction for $5.22 million, smashing the reserve price by $470,000.
Mr Payne and Jim Whitehead co-founded Whitehead and Payne, the architecture firm involved in major Sydney builds throughout the 1960s to 1980s, including complexes such as Grace Bros Chatswood, Roselands Shopping Centre, the Macquarie Centre, Northgate at Hornsby and Erina Fair at Gosford.
The retro property at 18C Kirkoswald Ave, was listed with Tim Foote of Belle Property Mosman, and Matthew Smythe of Belle Property Neutral Bay.
Mr Foote said the property’s unique design and prime location were key aspects of the successful sale.
“The unique property was both designed and built by its former vendor, Bill Payne, and his late wife in 1966,” Mr Foote said.
“The successful sale showcases the strength of the Mosman prestige market, and high demand for property in tightly held areas such as this.”
The retro build had been tightly held by the Payne duo since it’s build date in 1966.
Set over two expansive levels, the five-bedroom property features an original full brick build, and multiple open-plan interiors offering sweeping Mosmans views.
Property features include two custom-designed Smeg kitchen’s, multiple balconies, an upper level rumpus room, and a large paved outdoor entertaining area that features a wisteria clad pergola, and large pool.
The five-bedroom property is now home to a local Mosman family choosing to upsize.
