The death of New Zealand cartoonist Murray Ball has been called the end of an era by fans who grew up reading and watching his iconic comic Footrot Flats.

Ball died on Sunday at age 78 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Whether they read the comics in the Sunday paper, devoured the books, or laughed along to the movie — the adventures of Ball's character Wal Footrot and his sheepdog, Dog still hold a place in the hearts of many fans.

Those who grew up on the comic took to social media to share their memories and pay tribute to the storyteller.
