Warning: Your tropical holiday may contain coconuts.

FROM what a visa is, to where coconuts grow, Aussie travellers are a bit of a confused bunch.

We asked a couple of travel agents to dish the dirt on some of the bizarre questions they’ve had over the years, and their answers have been both frightening and enlightening.

“While I would say there are no ‘dumb’ questions (as we would prefer our clients ask us something than assume something which is wrong) there have been a few questions which make us smile,” admits helloworld Vermont South managing director Jenni Marr.

CONFESSIONS OF A FLIGHT ATTENDANT

Some of her favourites over the years have been:

• “If I don’t pay for a seat reservation on my flight will I have to stand?”

• On telling a client they need a Visa for travel to Vietnam — “I have a Mastercard — will I need to speak to my bank and change it over?”

• “Can I drive from London to Dublin?”

Fellow travel agent Matt Castell, of Escape Travel in Bondi Junction, says agents actually love to get bizarre requests as it keeps them on their toes.

“A colleague was recently asked by a male customer if she had any tips on sneaking an engagement ring through airport security as he was worried it may beep and ruin his planned surprise,” he says.

“On the other side of the romance spectrum, breakups can put travel agents in an awkward position. I’ve been asked to make sure that my client’s ex-boyfriend be seated on the opposite side of the plane so they wouldn’t have to see each other (it was a non-refundable holiday).”

Unusual items in luggage account for a number of strange requests, he says.

“We get A LOT of random questions about what can and cannot be taken as checked luggage: 23kg of prawns to New Zealand, a bucket of KFC to Manila, human remains (ashes) and even a mummified human head!”

Meanwhile, Escape’s own Doc Holiday travel advice columnist, Kim Culyer, has been faced with a few curly questions of her own, such as:

• “I only drink Coke — how many boxes of it can I take with me on my cruise?”

• “I get a rash every time I go away from my backpack rubbing, what do you suggest?”

• “I do not want to be on an plane with crying children. How do I guarantee this?”

Then again, there are some silly questions that you really are better off asking before you head away ...

“I once had a customer that was angry that I hadn’t warned him that there would be coconut trees in Fiji,” Castell says. “He said he was afraid to leave his room because one could fall from a tree and kill him.”
