CYCLONE Debbie was not invited, but could play a role in keeping up to 30 guests from attending the wedding of Channel 9 favourites, Sylvia Jeffreys and Peter Stefanovic.
Stefanovic’s Today show host brother, Karl made a late dash back to Sydney after broadcasting from flood-ravaged Brisbane yesterday — before hitting the road to Kangaroo Valley, in the Southern Highlands, where it is expected the TV couple will wed today.
Not so lucky are friends and family cut off by the effects of the wild weather, either in northern Queensland or around the Tweed River, after the areas were hit by torrential rain and destructive winds earlier this week.
Channel 9 reporters Jessica Millward and her Canberra correspondent fiance Joel Dry were expected to attend their colleagues nuptials, but were both on news duties in the flood zones.
Millward covered the aftermath of Debbie from Airlie Beach on Wednesday, before moving south in Queensland to Beaudesert.
After getting drenched during a series of live crosses, she told her Instagram followers: “let’s just say the sooner I become Jessica Dry...the better.”
Newsreader Jeffreys was not part of Today’s coverage from Wednesday onwards, as she prepared for her big day; while Stefanovic was spotted doing a final inspection of the venue on Thursday.
It is understood the couple — who bonded when they were paired together as summer fill-ins for his brother and Lisa Wilkinson — have done a deal with Australian Women’s Weekly who will publish official photos of the star-studded event.
The Today show’s on-air ‘family’ as well as executive producer Mark Calvert, his weather presenter wife Belinda Russell and a host of segment producers are all expected to attend, with the breakfast program to broadcast from Bowral on Monday morning from 6am.
One person who won’t be at the ceremony is Karl’s wife of 21 years, Cassandra Thorburn, who did not score an invite.
Karl’s younger girlfriend Jasmine Yarbrough will also not attend the festivities, thanks to a ban put in place by Jeffreys.
