One of the greatest winning streaks in sport history has ended, with the University of Connecticut women's basketball team beaten after 111 straight victories.

UConn's run was ended by Mississippi State University in overtime of their clash in the final four of the NCAA tournament in Dallas, with Mississippi State guard Morgan William nailing a floater at the buzzer to secure the 66-64 win.

It was redemption for William, whose game-winning attempt at the end of regulation had been blocked by UConn star Gabby Williams, sending the game to overtime.

Neither team could get much separation in the extra period, but the seemingly unbeatable Huskies levelled the game at 64 with 26.6 seconds left via two technical free throws by Katie Lou Samuelson.

The Huskies still had possession with a chance to hit the lead, but a turnover by Saniya Chong gave State 12.3 seconds to manufacture a winning shot.

William seized her opportunity, snaking her way inside the three-point line and launching a rainbow shot over Williams that went down just as the final buzzer sounded.

"For me to make that shot against them, it's just unbelievable. I'm in shock," she said.

UConn has won the past four national titles, while this year marks Mississippi State's first trip to the final four.
