The beachside suburb of Cronulla, situated 26km south of Sydney’s central business district, has long been famous for its sandy beaches, outdoorsy lifestyle, vibrant nightlife, and ardent football fans. Recently, Cronulla has added yet another feather to its cap: foodie paradise.

A slew of hip new bars, restaurants, artisanal bakeries, coffee shops, and gelaterias are enlivening the suburb. Establishments of note include Jake Chalmers (which serve sinfully scrumptious American-style hamburgers), the very hipster Blackwood Pantry (known for its wholesome salads and Vanilla Poached Salmon), and Shucked (try their fresh Scottish Oysters).

David Highland, co-founder of Highland Property Agents in Cronulla, said the suburb’s dining scene has really taken off over the past two years. “It’s a high-net-worth area,” he said. “There are plenty of people who enjoy good food and are prepared to pay for it. The hospitality industry is also responding to what’s happening at a real estate level.”

Cronulla’s median property prices have been on an upward trajectory since 2009. It’s now an astonishing $1.902m for houses and $1.018m for units. Like many parts of Sydney, the volume of stock hitting the market saw a noticeable decline in 2015-2016, a trend which has continued to this year.

“We see a lot of trading within the market. Many people who grew up in the area are trading up and down in terms of price point,” Highland said.

Land releases, such as Shearwater Landing at Greenhills Beach, have attracted the attention of buyers, while off-the-plan luxury units are proving popular with downsizing empty nesters.

“There are great opportunities for people to buy into the area,” Highland said.

Undoubtedly, the new culinary attractions only serve to make the suburb even more attractive to property investors and owner-occupiers.
