In one of the world's great sporting cities, Manchester's football clubs, athletes and organisers have responded to the suicide bombing of an Ariana Grande concert with concern and compassion.

The famous Manchester United is in preparations for a Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm on Thursday morning (AEST), but ground training to a halt and cancelled all media as the city began to recover from the attack.

Players and coaches paused for a minutes' silence during the last training session before flying out to Manchester.

"We're all very sad about the tragic events last night; we can't take out of our minds & hearts the victims & their families," manager Jose Mourinho said in a statement.

"We have a job to do & will fly to Sweden to do that job. It's a pity we cannot fly with the happiness we always have before a big game."

UEFA has said there is "no specific intelligence" to suggest the final itself is a target.

The FA said security would be ramped up for this weekend's FA Cup final, and asked fans to be patient as extra screenings took place outside the stadium.

"Fan safety is of paramount importance and we have robust security measures in place at Wembley Stadium," an FA statement read.

"All supporters are encouraged to arrive for events at Wembley Stadium as early as possible for security checks and to avoid any delays in entering the stadium."

Be it at the public vigil in the city centre or on social media, Manchester's star athletes expressed their grief after the attack which killed 22.

Among the tens of thousands in Albert Square, former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff stood alongside Mancunians to pay tribute and offer condolences.

Twitter became an outlet for Manchester United and Manchester City players, who come from all corners of the world.
