LET’S be honest, packing sucks.
But don’t worry, Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew is here to help. As a journalist and television presenter, Bartholomew knows a thing or two about having to pack up and travel, sometimes without much notice.
When she replaced Grant Denyer as the weather presenter for Channel 7’s breakfast show, she travelled for the show each day, reporting from various locations around Australia and the world.
Speaking to news.com.au, Bartholomew has shared some of her top travel hacks and advice, which should ease the pain of packing and leave more room for inspiration.
First of all, there are two things this seasoned traveller would never get on a plane without.
“I always travel with a small travel iron,” she told news.com.au. “I’ve had too many bad experiences with dodgy motel rooms and dodgy irons that ruin clothing at the last minute.
“And I always pack a water bottle too, and I make sure it’s with me on the plane. I empty it when going through customs and then ask the hostie to fill it up for me when I’m on the plane. I’ve always got water with me.”
What about when it comes to packing the rest of her suitcase efficiently? You want to be comfortable when you’re travelling but you also don’t want to end up spending hundreds on excess baggage. For that, Bartholomew said it’s all about being strategic.
“I try to travel in the shoes that I am going to be wearing mostly when I’m going away, so I’m not taking up space with clunky boots,” she said.
“And I always have a prepacked wash bag that has all the things you might forget but might not have time to go out and buy when you arrive. Things like bobby pins, hair ties, hairspray, travel sized shampoo and conditioner, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
“When it comes to cosmetics, I only really travel with five make-up products, and I’ll take them in my handbag just in case my luggage is lost. I take foundation, a small blush, a small eye shadow pallet, mascara and concealer.”
That being said, there are some things that although not necessarily essential, Bartholomew said she will still always try to make room for.
“I always take my gym gear. It doesn’t mean I always use it but inevitably the times I don’t take it, I always end up having the time to go for a walk or do some exercise.”
WHERE THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU?
While Bartholomew’s career has taken her all over the world, she told news.com.au that some of the most amazing places she has had the opportunity to visit have been right here.
In fact, taking time out to travel Australia is some of her most important advice.
“I think sometimes it is cheaper to go overseas than it is to experience our own backyard, so I can understand why people take that direction. It is also a bit of an Australian thing to take a few months off and travel the States or Asia for weeks on end,” Bartholomew said.
“But there is so much to do here. Australia is really extraordinary.”
Her favourite Australian destination is the Kimberley, in Western Australia.
“It is the most beautiful part of Australia by far, for me. It is so remote and so stunning and so uniquely Australian.
“Every Australian should go there because you have a real chance to still feel like you are on the tourist trail but still get away from it all.”
And in addition to exploring our own country, there is one other thing Bartholomew said every Australian should do.
“I love to travel by myself. I have been to some amazing places by myself — China, Cuba, South America.
“I love that experience and I think it is something everyone should try and have. I think a lot of people are afraid of travelling by themselves because they think it will be a lonely experience or they won’t have anyone to share it with.
“But you really do have some of the best experiences when you put yourself out there and you go out with the people that you met at your hostel and you make your own adventures that way.”
