The ACT branch of the RSPCA says it is unable to discuss reports of a growing internal rift pitting disgruntled frontline staff members against the management team.
The Canberra Times understands that some staff are concerned about perceived differences in opinion inside the organisation between animal inspectors and members of management.
These differences are understood to relate to operational health and safety concerns regarding the working environment as well as the treatment of animals.
"My greatest concern about the behaviour of management is the wellbeing of staff and most importantly the animals," said one source.
RSPCA ACT chief executive Tammy Ven Dange said it was not the organisation's policy to comment on such internal issues.
"RSPCA ACT does not make public statements about personnel matters," she said.
It has been alleged that one running disagreement resulted in the suspension of a senior and well-regarded animal inspector.
A number of other promising inspectors have also been shown the door in the past 12 months for rubbing management the wrong way, a source alleged.
Animal inspectors are appointed under territory legislation and have the power to investigate instances of animal cruelty as well as to prosecute offenders under animal welfare law.
One source alleged that the internal divisions were not only affecting staff morale, but also having an impact on the organisation's financial performance.
When asked about donors bailing out of the organisation, Ms Ven Dange said she had every expectation of turning a profit this year.
"While commercial revenue has suffered this year due to the shortages of veterinarians, at this time, RSPCA ACT is expecting to show a profit for the third year in a row."
RSPCA ACT currently has about 60 staff members, who work alongside hundreds of unpaid volunteers.
The latest annual report for the organisation showed it turned a funding surplus of $401,102 in 2015-16.
During that year it sheltered 4933 animals, while treating a further 3000 through its public vet clinic program.
