Amal Clooney has given birth to twins, her husband George Clooney's publicist told US media on Tuesday, the first children for the international human rights lawyer and her movie star spouse.

The couple welcomed a girl named Ella and a boy named Alexander.

"This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days," the couple said in a statement.

George Clooney, the 56-year-old Oscar-winning star of films like Ocean's Eleven and Three Kings, married the Lebanese-born lawyer in a ceremony in Venice, Italy in 2014.

Amal Clooney, 39, is a high-profile, Oxford-educated barrister who has represented clients including Julian Assange and the formerly jailed Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy.
