Police are on the hunt for a man in a red sedan with dark tinted windows who is reported to have followed at least three Mentone schoolgirls in June.

The first incident occurred about 8.35am on June 1 when a man pulled up beside a girl walking to school along Bourke Street.

The man, who was wearing a grey hooded jumper, wound down the window. He told the girl he was a friend of her mother's, instructing her to get into the car.

The schoolgirl did not recognise the man and ran across the road to a park. The man performed a U-turn but did not get out of the car.

Police believe the same man accosted another schoolgirl in Flinders Street, Mentone the following day about 8.15am.

She crossed the road, but he turned the car around and pulled into a driveway in front of her.

The young girl then walked around the car and continued walking down the street, where another man, not believed to be known to the first man, got out of a car.

The man in the red sedan stopped his pursuit and the girl continued safely on her way to school.

A few days later on June 5, a 13-year-old girl told her school that a man had followed her about 8.15am from Blackwood Avenue and along Acacia Avenue, Lower Dandenong Road and Ivy Street.

On this occasion, the man followed from a distance, but stopped once the girl joined her friends.

He was earlier seen getting out of a vehicle parked on Blackwood Avenue and was wearing a black hooded jumper and jeans.

Victoria Police have released a facial composite of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their investigations.

The man is described as Caucasian and of average height with a slim or broad build, dark brown or red hair, a beard and aged between 30 and 40 years.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
