Thousands of protesters have marched across cities in the United States demanding the impeachment of US President Donald Trump.

Protests took place across 45 cities in the country, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta, on Sunday (local time).

Organisers said on their website they believed the President had violated the US constitution, obstructed justice and enforced "laws that primarily benefit him and his billionaire friends at the expense of the country".

They said it was time for congressional representatives to begin the impeachment process.

One protester in Chicago said the behaviour of the President set a bad example.

"The worst part about this man is his behaviour, the example he sets and the terrible behaviour he encourages," the protester said.

"That's why we must get rid of him."

Videos posted from one march in Ann Arbor showed scores of people marching and carrying anti-Trump signs, some featuring slogans such as "Trump is Unhinged", "Stop the Trump Regime" and "Stop Trump, Save the World".

One marcher in Los Angeles, John Meranda, told the Los Angeles Times he had attended five recent anti-Trump marches.

The 56-year-old said he was most recently frightened by the Republican proposal to cut billions of dollars from the Medicaid program.

A smaller group of pro-Trump protesters gathered nearby outside Los Angeles police headquarters, while social media footage showed another group wearing "Make America Great Again" caps at a rally in New York.

The Trump supporters said they were unconcerned about allegations the US President tried to thwart an FBI investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The marches came after a busy weekend for the US President, who launched multiple attacks on the media and tweeted a video of him tackling and beating up CNN.
