US President Donald Trump is renowned for his unusual handshakes with world leaders, and his trip to France has delivered a fresh headline-grabbing shake that lasted 30 seconds.

As Mr Trump prepared to head home following Bastille Day celebrations in Paris, he and French President Emmanuel Macron clasped hands.

The pair held on to each other as they walked. Mr Trump at one point pulled the smaller Mr Macron off balance and held fast as they approached their wives.

Even then, Mr Trump held on to Mr Macron's hand as he shook hands with the French first lady, Brigitte.

Here is a compilation of some other memorable moments.

Emmanuel Macron, round one

Mr Trump and Mr Macron seemed to have a tense introduction in May; they locked hands for so long that their knuckles started turning white in a handshake the French President said "wasn't innocent".

Mr Macron later said that the showdown was a "moment of truth" designed to show that he is no pushover.

"One must show that you won't make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but also not over-publicise things, either," he said.

Shinzo Abe

Mr Trump's unusual handshake style came under scrutiny after a 19-second grip left Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe looking perplexed.

While they began the talks with a hug and smiles, a video the US President posted to Twitter of a second handshake between the two leaders attracted some criticism on the platform and was called "awkward" by many.

After the prolonged handshake Mr Abe is seen leaning back and rolling his eyes.

Justin Trudeau

Mr Trump tends to pull the people he shakes hands with in towards him, but Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems to have avoided it by grabbing the President's right shoulder with his left hand.

During their meeting in Washington in February, the two leaders downplayed their differences over refugee policy and vowed to push ahead with closer trade ties.

Mr Trump greeted the Canadian Prime Minister with a handshake as he arrived at the White House.

Angela Merkel

The meeting between Mr Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's in March produced an awkward moment when photographers requested a handshake.

Ms Merkel asked Mr Trump: "Do you want to have a handshake?"

But there was no response from the President, who looked straight ahead with his hands clasped together.

Malcolm Turnbull

Perhaps Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mr Trump did not get off to the best start, with the new President reportedly telling Mr Turnbull their phone call was the worst of a day on which he also spoke to other world leaders.

But in their first meeting in New York in May they appeared to get on well, with Mr Trump calling reports of the negative phone call "a bit of fake news".

Mr Turnbull's first attempt at a handshake failed, with Mr Trump failing to acknowledge or notice it, but the US President did offer his hand moments later.

Vladimir Putin

The first face-to-face meeting between Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was highly anticipated, and the two had plenty to talk about.

The two leaders met at the G20 summit in Hamburg earlier this month, in a meeting billed by the Kremlin as a simple "get to know you" encounter.

But the meeting, which was scheduled for 30 minutes, ended up running for more than two hours.
