Doctor Who showrunners are set to reveal the identity of the show's new lead, and speculation is rife that a woman will step into the Doctor's shoes for the first time.

The 12th Doctor, actor Peter Capaldi, announced in January he would be leaving the BBC's long-running cult classic at the end of this year.

The BBC said the announcement would take place immediately after the Wimbledon men's singles tennis final.

A teaser trailer featuring the 13th doctor in various locations has already aired, sending fans into a frenzy.

Actor Kris Marshall and actress Jodie Whittaker are reportedly among the favourites to take on the new role.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Tom Rosenthal, Michaela Coel, Tilda Swinton, David Harewood and James Morton have also been named as possible candidates.

The sci-fi series first aired in 1963, and its popularity is showing no signs of slowing down.

Capaldi's final episode as the Doctor will air this Christmas.

"I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on," he said after announcing he would be leaving the show.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat also announced earlier this year that he was preparing to leave the show.

Moffat, who it the show's lead writer and executive producer, told the ABC he had achieved everything he wanted to in his six series of Doctor Who.
