IT’S the end of an era, but the magic looks set to continue.

For almost 34 years, Magic Mountain, in the sleepy NSW south coast town of Merimbula, has been a family favourite to visit for a fun day out.

A toboggan run, water slides, a roller coaster, grand prix cars, splash pools and mini golf — it’s easy to see what the fuss is all about.

The park attracts about 40,000 visitors every year — with families of fun-seekers travelling from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra to visit the park.

But, now, it’s time for a changing of the guard — with owner Murray Beveridge deciding to sell the exciting property to a new family of fun-loving thrill seekers, and the asking price is just $3.25 million.

“We’ve been open nearly 34 years, and it’s time now (to sell),” Mr Beveridge said.

“It’s just the right time.

“I actually founded Magic Mountain, and I’ve got some partners, some are still the original partners, and some are new.

“But even our most recent partners have been around eight years or so.

“So, it’s just a matter of age and time for us.

“And that’s why we’ve decided to sell the place.”

Mr Beveridge said that — coming from a family of real estate agents — running a fun park wasn’t something he’d ever planned to do.

“I’m looking forward to retiring now,” he said.

“I’m old enough, and it’s time to move on.

“We’ve done great things with the place, and we’re all terribly proud of Magic Mountain.

“I’ve got a lot of favourite memories.”

Mr Beveridge said that not everyone believed the park would be the success it now is, when it opened in November 1983.

“We had a grand opening at the time — with all the local dignitaries, councillors and the like,” he said.

“The president came — that was what the mayor was called in those days.

“And I still remember today what he said at the opening.

“He said: ‘I wish you luck, but I think you’ll go broke’.”

Fortunately for Mr Beveridge this presidential prophecy was highly inaccurate.

Instead of failing, Magic Mountain has gone from strength-to-strength, with plenty of new rides and attractions added over the years.

“All the additions have been great,” Mr Beveridge said.

“I’m 70 years of age, and I think it’s time for me (to retire).

“I’ll play some golf, and spend time with my wife, two daughters, and the grandchildren.

“Over the years the kids have loved the place.

“We’ve plenty of happy memories, and it’s been rewarding.”

Listing agent Ray Larkin, from Manenti Quinlan and Associates, said the fun park would be a great buy for either a family or a corporate business.

The fun park was established in 1983 on 45 acres just a few kilometres north of Merimbula on the south coast of New South Wales.

Over the last 30 years, Magic Mountain has continuously improved, remodelled and added new and interesting rides and attractions.

The property includes a kiosk and cafe — fashioned out of an old Melbourne tram — and souvenir shop.

There’s also a natural amphitheatre for 2,500 guests with full dressing rooms, bathroom and waiting area with kitchenette at the rear for visiting performance artists — the latest big name visitors big being Justice Crew.

“My advice to new owners would be: ‘It’s not hard to operate, and the management staff that are in place at the moment do a great job,” Mr Beveridge said.

“With the right management staff, it’s easy.

“So, any purchaser, I would recommend they keep on the team we have in place — they’re great.”

The high-end rides are well-maintained, and many are based on Italian and German designs.

Mr Beveridge himself still plays an active role at Magic Mountain, operating the rides several days per week.

“The toboggan ride is the favourite — always has been, but the waterslides are pretty popular too,” he said

“I think the secret to Magic Mountain’s success is that it is user-friendly.

“It’s not too radical, and it’s great for families of all ages.

“It’s a testament to the place that, after all these years, people keep coming back.”

The park is currently shut for the winter and will re-open on September 6.
