What do the ACT Brumbies have to do to win you back?

Fewer than 10,000 people watched the Brumbies' play against the Wellington Hurricanes in a quarter-final at Canberra Stadium last weekend.

Hurricanes eliminate Brumbies

The Wellington Hurricanes have eliminated the only Australian side in the Super Rugby finals, with a 35-16 defeat of the ACT Brumbies.

It was a disappointing sight for the club, especially on a night it was welcoming back Christian Lealiifano after battling leukaemia as well as saying goodbye to coach Stephen Larkham.

Australian rugby is struggling on and off the field. But we've put together a list of nine things we think the Brumbies can do to start winning back Canberra and rebuilding a fan base.

1. Discount memberships

Take membership prices back five years. To protect yield, offer discounts or vouchers to members if the total membership base gets over a selected level. So if 10,000 people sign up, then the cost for everyone drops down.

2. Retro ticket prices

At least for one game, drop ticket prices back to what they were 15 years ago. The retro game of Brumbies legends earlier this year was a hit. Fans got a kick out of seeing Larkham take an intercept and score a try. It was like stepping back in time and cheap tickets equals happy fans.

3. Players hit the streets and go door to door

Send the players door-to-door. In politics they talk about how a party's "ground game" can make all the difference at election time. Canberra Labor's win at the last election was put down to their far superior efforts in meeting punters. Basically people are more likely to connect with - and vote for - someone who's taken the time to chat face-to-face. Brumbies players could get out there with membership packs and we'd be certain they'd come back with a good number of new members.

4. Kick to kick after every game

Let the fans onto the field to kick the ball around and meet the players. Every. Single. Week.

5. Revive game-day

The Canberra Stadium surface is one of the best in Australia, but it's time to get some horses and run them around the edge of the field to get the crowd pumped up. The Canterbury Crusaders do it and it works a treat. Fireworks, flames ... the whole lot. Don't copy the Viking Clap, but there's a lot to be said for a game-day gimmick. And it's time for a second big screen at the stadium.

6. School kids go for free

Each week pick three or four schools from around Canberra and give them all free tickets. Get kids talking about rugby again and then they'll nag their parents to go to games. Some might not turn up, but others might get hooked. It will be a financial hit, but if they weren't going to turn up anyway is it really a loss?

7. Find your lost members

Get into the membership database from 2004 and start ringing around or visiting people who dropped off. Sure, some people will tell you they're long lost, but others might just reconsider given the price is better. Perhaps an apology for taking them for granted. Encourage some membership community. Back in the membership glory days, people would get to know their neighbours in the seats year to year. Reward members who've stuck together in the same seats.

8. Create some crazy theme nights

Black-tie Brumbies. Disco. Come dressed as a horse. Provide a genuinely valuable prize for the people who come best in theme.

9. Reconnect with Canberra

Restore ACT to the name. Simple. No-brainer.
