Emerging West Australian golfer Curtis Luck is hoping to pull off a "Cinderella story" at this week's Canadian Open and lock up a US PGA Tour card as his rookie season draws to a close.

The 20-year-old Luck, who last year became just the third Australian to win the US Amateur Championship, was given a limited number of sponsor's invitations for his debut Tour season.

But he has a chance to defy the odds and finish within the top 125 golfers on the FedEx Cup standings.

From 10 events, the Perth native has earned $US354,706 and 150 points on the season-long race, leaving him equal 168th.

He has made six cuts, including a tie for 46th at his major championship debut at the Masters in April, and bagged a best finish of fifth at the Quicken Loans National earlier in July.

Luck requires an additional 168 points to move to 125th and be given full status on Tour for 2018, and could achieve that with a third place or better at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Glen Abbey course near Toronto this week.

He may also be given another sponsor's exemption to one of the two remaining events of the regular season - next week's Barracuda Championship or the Wyndham Championship the following week.

"I definitely feel comfortable out here and I'm happy with my performance this season," Luck said.

"Being a fader of the golf ball, Glen Abbey has a lot of left-to-right tee shots that suit my eye.

"I'm ready to go and hopefully the Canadian Open will be a week that will be a Cinderella story for me."

But Luck, who became the first amateur to win the US and Asia Pacific Amateur championship in the same year, is still a strong chance of remaining within the top 200 on the FedEx Cup tally.

That would earn him a berth in the secondary Web.com Tour playoffs in September, where he can win his way back to the main Tour.

"The two big goals for me this year were to learn everything I can about playing on the big stage and to seal a Tour to play on in 2018," Luck said.

"So to get through to Web.com finals ticks one of those goals completely.

"It would be nice to get the cherry at the end, but I've played 10 events and to get as far as I have in my rookie season is really confidence-inspiring going forward."
