ANGELA Somerville thought she would never marry when she turned 39 back in 1985 — so she bought herself the ultimate singles pad, complete with shag carpets and a ladder from the pool into the bedroom.

But her beloved bachelorette pad is now up for sale for a reason she never expected — at the age of 71, she has just married the man of her dreams.

The first-time bride married Ron McAlpine, 78, in a private ceremony earlier this year and said she was excited to be starting their life together in a new home.

She is moving on from her single life, which includes listing her Cremorne Point apartment that has hosted glamour parties, been hired by TV crews and even Penthouse Magazine for a raunchy photo shoot.

“I will miss the home. I had some great times there but I have a different lifestyle now,” the new Mrs McAlpine said.

“Being married just feels wonderful. I finally realise what I have been missing all these years.”

She met Mr McAlpine, a widower and former head of condiments company Three Threes, two years ago through mutual friends at a yacht club.

“We really hit it off,” Mrs McAlpine said.

“We decided we wouldn’t get married but then one day Ron dropped to one knee and said: ‘I really want to marry you’. We’d had some wine and I thought he was joking so it took me a while to say yes. I’m obviously glad I did.”

Mr McAlpine said he was “knocked over backwards” when she said yes.

“I was so happy,” he said. “We had talked about not needing to marry but something went haywire in my head and I went out on our balcony and asked her. She’s just great to be with. We love spending our time together.”

Since marrying, the couple have been living it large, jetting around the country, enjoying cruises and tours to the outback.

Mrs McAlpine said it was her first chance to travel for pleasure, not business.

“I guess one of the reasons I hadn’t met the right guy was that I was married to work. My bag was always packed and I didn’t have much time for anything else,” she said.

Selling her two-bedroom unit at 78 Milson Rd will complete the change from single to happily married.

“It was an amazing place, especially when I bought it. There weren’t many other properties like it but we’ll be living somewhere else,” she said.

Selling agent Gareth Richards of McGrath-Neutral Bay said there was an extraordinary level of extravagance to the home.

“You can wake up and go straight into the pool, then slip into back into the bedroom for a shower,” Mr Richards said.

“Going into the property is an experience. We had to extend the open home for an extra hour because everyone was just chilling in the entertaining area listening to music and wanted to stay. It’s an amazing place.”

The home goes to auction on November 30 with a price guide of $3.8 million.
