American golfer Tony Finau quickly turned a once-in-a-lifetime sporting highlight into a blooper reel classic when he dislocated his ankle while celebrating a hole-in-one during the Masters par-three tournament.

Arms raised in triumph, Finau ran down Augusta's seventh hole fairway after hitting the hole-in-one during the traditional US Masters curtain raiser.

But after turning back towards his wife and four children — who were acting as caddies in the family-friendly event — Finau rolled over on his left ankle and collapsed to the grass.

The 28-year-old quickly repositioned his ankle into place before hobbling back up the fairway towards his family with noticeably less enthusiasm.

Finau played on in the event with a high ankle sprain. An MRI later revealed the ankle was not broken.

Finau's celebration contrasted to an injury-free jump for joy by Jack Nicklaus' 15-year-old grandson, who also scored a hole-in-one in the event.

But Finau's ill-fated celebration is likely to stay in the memory longer, combining the agony reminiscent of watching Mel Gibson slam his dislocated shoulder into place in Lethal Weapon 2 with the ecstasy of one of golf's most exciting plays.
