Advice for budding makers of films and TV shows: be bold, work hard and try to find a like-minded creative team.
Collaboration that sparks ideas and carries everyone through all the knockbacks is an underappreciated part of creative success.
You only need look at what the Working Dog team, the production company behind hit films such as The Castle and The Dish, has achieved – both on screen and behind the camera.
The group, founded by the multitasking Rob Sitch, Jane Kennedy, Santo Cilauro, Tom Gleisner and producer Michael Hirsh, has had success in more creative fields than Darryl Kerrigan has had chicken dinners. They have written comic travel guides, cookery books and cricket memoirs, released albums and podcasts, worked on radio shows and created a stage show.
On TV, they have made sketch comedies (headed by The Late Show), talk shows (The Panel, Pictures of You), a game show (Have You Been Paying Attention?), an improvised comedy show (Thank God You're Here), a documentary, an animated series and multiple comedy series (The Hollowmen, All Aussie Adventures and Utopia).
