ONE of Bendigo’s most-prestigious homes has hit the market for $1.4 million.
Belmont, a stunning six-bedroom Victorian house on a 1400sq m block at 302 High St, is attracting Melburnians wanting to relocate for the country lifestyle.
City buyers were seeing value in the property, according to RT Edgar Woodend’s Corey Prendergast.
“This is a cracker of a place and the most prestigious home in Golden Square,” he said.
“It would sell for at least $14 million in Hawthorn.”
Belmont’s history and remarkable restoration were also drawcards.
“Owners have spent a fortune resurrecting the rundown home to its former glory,” Mr Prendergast said.
“The transformation is absolutely brilliant.”

The house was built in 1867 by a miner who struck it rich at the goldfields.
He also established The United Kingdom Hotel, circa 1849, across the road, according to Mr Prendergast.
The property had changed hands a number of times over the years.
During the 1880s, it was the home and surgery of a doctor who extended in the house in 1907.
In the 1950s, a family of Italian migrants who were involved in the construction of Bendigo’s landmark Sacred Heart Cathedral lived at the property.
The brick and sandstone house is an enviable combination of Victorian charm and contemporary design.
Staying true to its origins, it showcases a host of period features including a leadlight front entrance, bluestone steps and veranda with ornate metal lacework.
Baltic timber floors, six open fireplaces and 10m long sandstone cellar are found inside.
“The original bell system used to summon servants who lived downstairs is still in operation,” Mr Prendergast said.
The floorplan is spread over two levels and includes four bathrooms, four living areas, a dining room, study, and a modern kitchen with Miele appliances and marble benchtops.
There is an integrated self-contained guest accommodation for a teenager, extended family member or commercial enterprise.
The property comes with a Tuscan-style courtyard, an English garden and an orchard.
Zoned commercial 1, it has potential for further residential or commercial development.
The property is about 3km from the city centre and near Girton grammar school.
