A popular surfing beach near Geelong has been closed after two lifesavers on jet skis spotted a large shark near the shore, while another shark was spotted on the Mornington Peninsula minutes later.

Lifesaving Victoria State Duty Officer Kane Treloar said the two lifesavers spotted a “three-metre shark of unknown type” near Thirteenth Beach on the Bellarine Peninsula at 3.40pm on Sunday afternoon.

“It was about 150 metres south-east of the beach and so lifesavers closed the beach immediately for the remainder of the day,” Mr Treloar said.

Ten minutes later volunteer lifesavers from the Rosebud-McCrae Lifesaving Club on the Mornington Peninsula responded to a shark sighting called in by a member of the public off McCrae beach.
