One of the apartments inside a hosiery factory conversion will go to auction this Saturday.

It might appear as a standard apartment complex, but the former Staley & Staley Holeproof Hosiery site is packed with historic features.

The factory opened in 1930 and was the first manufacturer to produce Australian self-supporting socks.

The foundation stone laid by former Prime Minister James Scullin was saved from the landfill by a former Holeproof worker and now appears in the foyer.

The former Staley & Staley Holeproof Hosiery site has a rich history.

The company was incorporated into Dunlop Australia in 1968 after employing over 600 people at one stage.

It was converted into apartments about 20 years ago, and one of the units at 314/1-3 Dods Street, Brunswick is now up for grabs with a price tag of $560,000-$610,000.

Harrington Earl Clifton Hill agent Steve Earl said the 110sq m apartment was unusually big for a one-bedroom apartment.

He said it was the closest thing to a New York-lifestyle development.

“The apartments are built around the common area and the internal courtyard is reminiscent of one in a Spanish-style mansion,” Mr Earl said.

“With large goods elevators and a massive foyer, it is a modern purpose building with original features.

“The history of the building would be quite well known to the older Brunswick community.”

The apartment features a kitchen, laundry space and open-plan living and dining area.

It opens to a northerly terrace with views of the Christ Church Brunswick bell tower.

It also includes a one-car garage space, storage unit and 3.2m-high ceilings.

Mr Earl said the property was well suited to young professionals, couples and older residents.

Holeproof Hosiery was incorporated into Dunlop Australia in 1968.

“The bulk of interest is local but two potential buyers are flying in from interstate,” Mr Earl said.

“There are four or five genuine buyers who are interested.”

It is set to head under the hammer on February 23 at 11am.
