This renovated workers cottage at 18 Balmain Tce, Red Hill will go to auction on Saturday at 10am.

ELEVEN years ago, Leighton Thomas and Anna Baranoff, were a young Ashgrove professional couple bidding against six other parties to buy a 108-year-old Red Hill renovator.

THEN: This is what all the fuss was about, a great floorplan but lots of work. The good news for bidders at this Saturday’s auction is that Leighton Thomas and Anna Baranoff are architects and they’ve done all the work for you.

Two children and a double renovation later, and the young architects are now ready to go back to auction, but this time as the sellers.

“This was our first real project together in a beautiful location,” Ms Baranoff said.

“The views out the back are phenomenal and when we saw it before auction, I thought I’d really like to get that house.”

“We’ve had people come back to view the property two to three times,” Mr Thomas said.

“We’d love to get to know them but we’re very emotionally attached to the house so we’ll leave that to Angela.”

The property has had two renovations, with four months transforming the upstairs workers cottage and then six months creating a modern retreat downstairs with polished concrete floors.

The house is designed to let natural breezes in and the heat out.

Internal living space has been doubled and rooms have been opened to create an adaptable inner city home.

“We wanted the cottage to be authentic in character, and it had a good floorplan, along with the views of Red Hill.

“And we wanted to modernise downstairs with spa like luxury in the master bedroom and polished concrete.”

The couple are proud of their contribution to the vibrant Red Hill community and believe their house would suit a variety of buyer groups.

“You can see double income no kids, emerging families, it’s got a great large yard, and also there’s considerable interest from downsizers moving to Red Hill. And it would suit adult families with adult children, because of the separation.”
