We got a good offer for him during the week but the owners didn’t take it because they want to have a good horse.

Shinn didn’t have that problem on The Chosen One ($5) as he rounded the field and raced away from a 1½  length win from Dealmaker ($5) with Purple Sector ($26) a short neck back third.

Shinn said he was confident after riding The Chosen One in the Australian  Derby, where he was an eye-catching fourth.

“When they slowed up from the 1200m I had to go and he went quickly but was still able to sustain it," Shinn said.

“The Derby was a little bit frustrating. We were the victim of a wide barrier, we had to take him back. I thought his run was arguably the best run in the race and he brought that form here.

“I was confident that we could make that searching run on him, but we were coming back 400m in trip so I was mindful of that.

“He did the job nicely, he is a lovely horse.”

Andrew Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker, believes the best is yet to come from the Savabeel colt after the group 3.

“We got a good offer for him during the week but the owners didn’t take it because they want to have a good horse,” Forsman said. “I think he is only going to get better in the spring.

“I was actually surprised he wasn’t favourite in that race after his Derby run. It was the best run of the day, and Blake rode him with a little arrogance.”

The Chosen One is likely to be spelled with an eye to spring.

“He has still got some maturing to do and is a very well bred colt. I can see some good opportunities for him in the spring,” Forsman said.

“We don’t want to go one run too far with him, so I think we go home [to New Zealand] and can give him a good spell and come back in the spring.”

There were a couple of other hard luck stories.  House Of Cartier, which was fifth only two lengths from the winner, is likely to head for the Oaks in Adelaide.

“She ran terrific, got held up at a crucial time. She did a good job,” jockey Brenton Avdulla said.

Her trainer, John Sargent, added: “She showed she is good enough to have a crack at a group 1 against her own sex and those races in Adelaide look the right way to go.”
