If recently departed North Melbourne coach Brad Scott had his time again, he wouldn’t have looked to put a bump journalist David King.

The rapid fall of Scott from the job he’d held for a decade with the Kangaroos to leaving the club saw emotional scenes over the weekend as his side won his final game in charge.

But his regret from the past few days came at the three quarter time break when Scott bumped former North Melbourne star David King, who had been critical of Scott’s tenure.

When asked in the press conference about the confrontation, Scott deflected the incident.

“I haven’t spoken to David King in years,” Scott replied. “I get frustrated sometimes when the cameras are too close to our huddle.

“There was a time I put my shoulder straight through David King. It was at the Gabba in the late ‘90s and he didn’t respond then either. So I’m not about to start doing that again. I’m a coach, not a player.”

But speaking on Fox Footy’s AFL360 in a wide ranging chat, Scott admitted he regretted the incident.

“I probably would (take that back) but I don’t live my life in hindsight,” he admitted. “Life’s full of mistakes and if you don’t make mistakes, you don’t get better.

“I pride myself on certainly my professional life living on the edge, and I’ve been an absolute competitor. And when you are on the edge, you’re going to tip over the edge a couple of times. I don’t waste any time on it (watching it again).”

Scott admitted it had been an emotional weekend and that he broke a laptop after his final game.

But one of the more striking elements of the game was the clear esteem his players held him in with plenty of tears.

He admitted the board had wanted to contend for the premiership but Scott was continuing the rebuild that started in 2017, when Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito were all pushed out of the club to free up cash for a big name poaching raid.

“There’s a view out there that the senior coach makes unilateral decisions on list builds,” he said. “Clearly the senior coach is an influential voice, but at the end of the day there are people — list managers, GMs of footy, boards — and it’s a collective decision.

“I’m certainly not absolving myself of that decision, but in 2017, we set forth on a strategic direction and it didn’t work. But I think we’ve learned some really valuable lessons out of that.

“I’ve often joked that there are not too many players that say they want to return home to the commission buildings in Kensington and play for North Melbourne, like they do at some other clubs.”

Scott has maintained he has been “fiercely loyal” which is where the emotion of his final match came from.

He also said he was optimistic about the club’s future.

As for his future, former AFL legend David Schwarz told Macquarie Sports Radio Scott’s future may not be as clear as thought with Carlton, St Kilda and Essendon unlikely to push for the coach.

“From all of my friends I’ve spoken to, they don’t want Brad Scott,” Schwarz said. “I don’t know why, but some coaches you look at and you watch them play and think they might not be good for your side.”

Asked if he wanted to coach again, Scott said it was up in the air.

“I don’t know, is the truthful answer,” he said. “I deliberately made sure that this was all about the club and had absolutely nothing to do with me. I’ve made that really clear and had to patch things up with Craig Kelly (his manager), because I kept this from him. Purely because if I told him he would go and do his job, and he’s very good at his job.

“(Keeping the news from people was) critical. Absolutely critical. Because it just means that we’re doing this for the right reasons, and for anyone to even think for a second that this hasn’t been done for the right reasons would be hugely detrimental to what we’ve done over 10 years.”
