Lifeguards at a NSW beach have had to rescue a pair of feral deer after they wandered down to the shore and were washed into the ocean.

Early this morning Wollongong residents spotted at least three deer on frolicking around on North Beach.

One of the deer was seen running along the sand, while the two others appeared to be stuck on a rock platform.

Footage filmed by Courtney Steltenpool and uploaded to the Surf Life Saving Illawarra Facebook page shows the deer being lashed by waves as they stand on the rock platform.

“Oh Deer. Not what you expect at North Wollongong this morning,” the life saving group wrote.

“Local deer climbing onto rocks, after a swim in the ocean, another deer was last seen walking along beach at Puckeys further north.”

The animals found themselves in a bit of trouble when they were pushed back into the water by strong waves.

Local lifeguards rescued the deer by using jet skis to guide the animals back to shore.

One of the deer returned to Puckey’s Reserve, where it is believed the animals came from.

The other deer climbed onto the embankment dear the Continental Pool and was being monitored by rangers.

However, due to concerns for the animal’s welfare and community safety the deer was euthanized.

Wollongong City Council said the area was cordoned off to the public and the animal was tranquillised by a qualified contractor.

“Once tranquillised, it was euthanized,” the statement said, according to the Illawarra Star.

“NSW Police worked closely with council staff to ensure community safety while this work was undertaken.”
