Sandra Amoros, 24, died after being hit by the half-tonne boulder, which trapped and injured her male pal at a popular beach on the island, The Sun reported.

The horror incident took place at Cala Vinyes in Calvia when the rock Ms Amoros was sitting on gave way as she was next to her friend Adelardo Contador, 25.

The friends, both waiters at a bar in nearby Palmanova, had gone for a moonlit walk one night and walked down steps to reach the rocks when the tragedy struck.

“We sat down on the rock and before noticing, it had fallen over us,” Mr Contador said.

“I had gone to my boss’ restaurant and waited for her to come out. She had told me she was showing me a very beautiful place.

“She had been there last year. When we sat down on the rock, it counterbalanced. The rock we were sitting on fell onto us.”

The rock, reportedly weighing half a tonne, collapsed onto the pair and killed Ms Amoros instantly, while Mr Contador had his legs trapped under it.

“I started to call her, Sandra, Sandra, but she was not answering me,” he said.

“Thanks to my mobile phone, I could call the emergency services. I tried to calm down despite the pain.”

Mr Contador used his phone to signal his position to the emergency services who rescued him, but he suffered broken vertebrae.

He slammed authorities for leaving the area open to the public.

“That place should not be like that, open to the public. How is it possible that there are steps to get to the stones when some years ago a similar thing happened in Malgrats?” he said.

David Contador, the victim’s brother, said it took two hours for his brother to be rescued.

Speaking about Ms Amoros, Mr Contador said: “We had known each other since last year.

“She was from Yecla, in the southeastern Spanish region of Murcia, and I am from Barcarrota, in the western province of Badajoz. We laughed a lot.”

It is unclear if the accident is being investigated by the authorities.
