When Sean first laid eyes on his St Peters home five years ago, he knew he had found the ultimate hidden gem.
Boasting a character-filled but basic street facade, the original 1950 Austerity waterfall home at 36 Tenth Ave, was a surprise package not even he was prepared for when walking through the front door.

What hadn’t been obvious from the main road was that the house had been given a luxury extension by renowned architect Max Pritchard, perfectly blending the old with the new.
The first time I went past (the property), I thought I had the wrong house – and that’s how the original owners wanted to keep it,” Sean says.
“But the interesting extension was the main reason I bought it. It was not your typical extension – it was quite quirky, and I was looking for something that was a little different.”
While the home’s extension has remained much the same over the past five years, Sean said he commissioned another architect to give the front of the home a new look.
“The front of the house is actually an original Austerity waterfall home, which were built post war when there wasn’t much money to go around but people tried to make their homes a little fancier,” he said.
“I wanted to make sure it retained a bit of its originality, so that’s when the new architect came up with the window boxes and a look that was a bit more modern. We also put a new roof on and got rid of the old tiles.
“I think it came up really well — particularly before the renovation — people thought it was two houses. Someone actually said to me once, `do your mum and dad live in the old house?’. So it’s been a great talking point and a great surprise for people when they came in and saw the rest of the home.”
Set on a spacious 950sqm block, the airy and natural light-filled home is split over four levels.
It features four bedrooms, including a large master with a walk-in robe and a private courtyard. It also comes with a bespoke ensuite, complete with a two-person bath, a separate double shower, a double vanity, and heated flooring.
Meanwhile, bedrooms two and three feature Ralph Lauren designed wallpaper and new full length double layered curtains with Original Foscarini lighting.
The home also has an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, with a European-style open fireplace.
The designer kitchen features Miele appliances, Jarrah benchtops, and a very spacious butler’s pantry. There’s also downstairs media room with automatically controlled full sized velvet curtains and a large screen with heavy duty speaker system/amplifier.
Other features include a double garage, a heated saltwater pool, a solar system and a large outdoor entertaining space. The home also backs onto a reserve, with a coded lockable gate providing direct access to a children’s playground.
“One of the big features is that big playground out the back, which has been good for the kids over the years,” Sean says.
“The house has also been a great entertainer and we had parties with over 100 people here.
“But it’s the upstairs family room that’s my favourite spot in the home. It’s such a light and airy room. It has an awesome view to the trees out the back, which makes you feel like you’re not in the city at all, but somewhere in the country.”
The property is on the market with Klemich Real Estate.
