Soccer star Aaron Mooy has sold his penthouse at 608/125 Francis St, Yarraville.

Socceroo Aaron Mooy has booted his Yarraville penthouse.

A shootout between three bidders pushed the price of the three-bedroom apartment at 608/125 Francis St to $901,000.

While above the asking price of $800,000-$880,000, the sale amounted to a loss for the star midfielder who bought it off the plan for $914,000 in 2015 when the market was booming.

UK-based Mooy was represented at the auction by brother Alex, who said the sale price exceeded their expectations.

“He will be very happy and surprised. He was envisaging $860,000,” Mr Mooy said.

Spectacular city views are on offer from the living area and terrace.

The views attracted the buyers.

Buyers Helen Thomas and John Tsitos didn’t know about their new home’s celebrity seller until they arrived at the auction.

“I’m a soccer fan, so I knew exactly who he was when I saw the name on the contract,” Mr Tsitos said.

Biggin & Scott listing agent Matthew John said Mooy, a former Melbourne City player in the A-League, had planned to live in the sixth-floor pad but was lured overseas before the building was finished.

Mooy had planned to live at 608/125 Francis St, Yarraville, but instead rented it out.

Mooy made headlines for signing a £10 million deal (now worth AU$18 million) with Huddersfield Town in 2017, the year the club was promoted to the English Premier League.

His team has since been relegated to the English Football League Championship, with Premier League clubs said to be chasing the 28-year-old’s signature.

The penthouse has three bedrooms.

Ms Thomas said she and Mr Tsitos were drawn to the penthouse by its spectacular 200-degree views and space.

“The vendor’s identity was an interesting twist but the views and the space are what really appealed to us,” she said.

The couple, who have been renting in Newport since selling a Port Melbourne apartment a few years ago, started out looking for a house but found slim pickings on the market.

Ms Thomas said they were relieved and thrilled to win the keys to the penthouse in the suburb’s tallest building after missing out at previous auctions.

The pair held off competition from another couple, who opened the bidding at $800,000, and a third bidder, a young woman who was getting advice over the phone.

Biggin & Scott auctioneer Tristan Tomasino took 13 bids, starting in $20,000 increments before getting down to $1000 increases.

Mr John could not reveal the reserve but said it was near the top end of the advertised price range.

Biggin & Scott took over the listing from another agent less than a month ago.

Mr Mooy said the best offer his brother had received previously was $840,000.

He said his brother had no plans to buy another property in Australia.

“He already owns a house in Scotland, in the west end of Glasgow and that’s his main focus from a property perspective,” he said.
