First-home buyers tired of missing out battled upgraders to push an original Wantirna home to an almost seven-figure result.
A couple, with two young children in tow, raised the bidding by $5000 to $975,000 for 15A Harmsworth Ave and knocked out the competition.
The family, who are renting locally, had missed out on buying over several months and were determined to secure their first home having migrated from China.

“They were just tired of looking after so long and would have bid more if the auction had continued,” Ray White Wantirna agent Ping Chu said.
She said two other first-home buyers renting nearby, and still looking, had been in the auction race when it went past the $900,000 mark.
Ms Chu said the lack of listings in Wantirna and demand from first-home buyers resulted in the strong result for the 752sq m property.
The four-bedroom house had a $830,000-$910,000 price guide, with the opening bid at $830,000 jumping $40,000 with the second bid, Ms Chu said.
She declined to disclose the reserve price except for that the result was well above the vendor’s hopes.
It is understood the vendors received almost $50,000 above the reserve, with the listing attracting five bidders and 120 groups at inspections.
The one-owner house is in good, original condition with an update to the kitchen carried out several years ago. It is close to several schools, shops and highways.
The median price for Wantirna houses was $842,000 in the year to June 27 from 83 sales, according to realestate.com.au.
This was a sharp decline of $100,000 from the $942,000 median price in the year to last July from a total of 167 sales.
