The former Kensington shopfront has a $1.25-$1.35 million price range.

There’s nothing cookie-cutter about the interiors of this historic shopfront.

The circa-1880 property at 127 Rankins Rd, Kensington was reportedly a butcher, hardware shop and, most recently, a milk bar before being converted into a residence.

Now fitted with a “circus tent” style bedroom, chessboard backyard and a host of modern amenities, the property is up for grabs with a $1.25-$1.35 million price tag.

Nelson Alexander Flemington agent Paul Harrison said the vendors stripped the residence “back to dirt floors and brick walls” before “renovating every square inch of the property”.

“When they bought it, it was an old residence. They gutted the whole lot and started from scratch internally,” Mr Harrison said.

“Now, when you open the front door, you gain a full appreciation for the fit out.

“It’s sophisticated, stylish and complements the facade.”

At the front is the open-plan living, dining room and kitchen with a breakfast bar, Fisher and Paykel dishwasher and pink splashback. Beyond is a bathroom, bedroom, courtyard and a double garage.

Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with built-in wardrobe, which share a second bathroom.

Mr Harrison said the vendor’s children helped design the orange and white striped bedroom which “looks like a circus tent (with a) multi-coloured chandelier.”

He added that the vendors were staying in the area, but found a house that better suited their needs

“Professional couples, young families and investors would be interested in something like this,” he said.

“It would be a great addition to any portfolio.

The property, which last sold for $592,000 in 2007 according to CoreLogic, is expected to go under the hammer on August 10.
