Struggling to find a rental? You’re not alone.
New data by realestate.com.au has revealed Adelaide’s most tightly held rental suburbs with a few surprises on the list.
Chandlers Hill, Houghton, Lynton, Mount Osmond, Mylor, Wingfield and Gillman all recorded just one rental listing over the 12 months to June, making them the city’s most difficult suburbs to break into.
Meanwhile, Piccadilly, Heathfield and Greenhill recorded just two listings over the same time period.

Realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee said a lack of rentals were most likely caused from owner occupied properties or lack of investment in those suburbs.
“We find that when people look to invest in Adelaide, they tend to focus on the premium locations,” she said.
“But people that are wanting to rent are wanting properties throughout the city, there’s this bit of a mismatch.”
Ms Conisbee said it was interesting the Adelaide Hills lacked rental properties considering its strong demand.
“Maybe a lot of people have taken advantage of the price growth and are buying something that’s cheaper (to occupy),” she said.
Adelaide Hills tenant Casey Johnston and her partner, Pieran, spent three months searching for a rental property and found the process competitive.
“There were some absolute gems we found online in Crafers West for $300 a week. We would attend the inspections to find so many people there, so we knew that it was going to be quite competitive,” she said.
Ms Johnston said it was difficult to find a property, as rentals in their price range were either located too far out or were leased to families.
“As a mid-20s couple we found it quite intimidating, as we would have to compete with families for a rental,” she said.
“We found properties in Belair to be quite expensive. We were extremely lucky to find a private rental in Coromandel Valley and they were happy to take on a younger couple in a bigger property.”
Ouwens Casserly Real Estate director Nathan Casserly said renters wanting to break into sought-after suburbs should “put themselves in the agent or landlords’ shoes”.
“The more organised, planned and prepared you are, the more your chances in getting the property,” he said.
“Make sure you have your references ready to go, make yourself as appealing as possible. If the property is in a great demand area, you need to move very quickly.”
