A timber merchant’s original home is up for sale in Northcote.

Built by the founder of a huge hardware store, the craftsmanship of this Northcote property is first class.

The circa-1917 property at 67 James St was the family home of William C. Neeland, who established Neelands Timber Merchant.

It features period details including the original timber panelling, and is on the market for $2-$2.2 million.

Nelson Alexander Northcote agent Roland Paterson said Mr Neeland invested his own materials in the property.

“The high quality timber panels were made from a very unusual grain, and we believe the self-contained studio at the rear is original. I can’t imagine there are too many studios dating back that long,” Mr Paterson said.

“If somebody intends to do further work, there are really good period features to work with. The views are already impressive, but you would have phenomenal views of the Dandenongs if you extended at the back.

“The home is in very comfortable condition with potential for improvement.”

The elevated weatherboard facade features a “rotunda area” and is surrounded by greenery.

The ornate L-shaped entrance hallway dressed with Fiddleback timber moves around the three bedrooms, family bathroom and formal living room with original leadlight windows and an open fireplace.

It leads to the open-plan living domain with a bay window and another fireplace, while the kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances.

The dining room flows through French doors to the paved entertainment deck, landscaped garden and garage.

The self-contained studio at the rear includes a bathroom, kitchenette and bedroom.

One of the bedrooms has a bay window.

Mr Paterson said the vendors lived in the home for about 15 years and had recently landscaped the garden.

He said they were now looking to downsize.

“The home would be perfect for a young family in a single fronted terrace around Fitzroy, Fitzroy North or Clifton Hill who were looking for more space,” he said

“It also suits downsizers looking to transition from large homes.”

Plenty of light comes through the leadlight windows.

The property, which last sold for $295,000 in January 1997, is expected to head under the hammer on August 17.
