Unconventional homes are the new kid on the block attracting buyers’ attention.

Although demand for character homes remains strong in Adelaide, it appears there’s growing demand for unconventional properties as buyers flock to homes with pitched-roofs, quirky features and architectural design.

Ouwens Casserly Real Estate selling agent Mark Bressington said his recent listing, pictured, was one of the most unique properties he had seen on the market.

“I’ve been in this business for a number of years and I’ve never seen anything comparable with it,” he said.

Although it might look like it’s set in the midst of a rainforest, the property conveniently sits just a short drive from Burnside Village, at 14 Slapes Gully Rd, Burnside.

Mr Bressington said the property had attracted strong interest from interstate buyers and combined the best of both worlds.

“It’s a house of grand proportion,” he said.

“You’re right in suburbia, but it basically looks over a reserve and backs onto a park. You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere – when you get there it blows your mind.”

Magain Real Estate agent Travis Denham said his recent listing, at 176 Cut Hill Rd Kangarilla, had proved overwhelmingly popular with buyers – attracting more than 100 people to the first open inspection.

“It’s attracted a really wide cross section, we’re not really attracting the young buyers – more from the early 30s and up,” he said.

“I haven’t had any buyers coming in that wanted to change the style of the property.”

Although buyers appeared to be keen on out-of-the-ordinary properties close to amenities, Mr Denham said rural properties were more likely to have these sought-after traits.

“I think buyers that are looking for an acreage are more interested in those quirky-style properties. I think it goes to the kind of buyer that wants to be in the hills or wants that old-world feel,” he said.

“It’s never gone out of style for that certain demographic of buyer.”
