Five people are feared dead after a light plane crashed on a beach in Far North Queensland.

The wreckage of the charter plane was found on a beach just south of Lockhart River, about 800 kilometres north of Cairns, around 1:30pm.

The ABC understands four government workers from Cairns and the pilot were on the flight.

The plane was reported missing around 11:30am.

It is understood the pilot attempted to land twice, before crashing.

Two rescue helicopters found the wreckage of the Cessna 404 Titan aircraft about five nautical miles south of the township of Lockhart River.

Weather in the area is extremely poor with a cyclone brewing off the coast.

Police are on the scene and have blocked off all access to the area.

The Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the crash.
