Homicide detectives are questioning a man over the suspected murders of two people whose bodies were found at a unit in the inner Perth suburb of Victoria Park.
Key points:
- A man and woman were found dead on Sunday afternoon
- Police say they knew each other
- Neighbours reported hearing screams from the apartment block
A man and a woman were found dead inside the Leonard Street unit yesterday afternoon.
WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson told ABC Radio Perth it was believed the pair were known to each other.
"We believe both were [the] subject of homicide," he said.
Police said a man was assisting them with their investigation into what Commissioner Dawson said was a "very suspicious and tragic set of circumstances".
"There's a very big team working on this now," he said.
Screaming and yelling heard by neighbours
A large contingent of detectives was present at the apartment block on Monday morning.
Neighbours reported hearing screaming and yelling coming from the building, on the corner of Leonard and Washington streets, about 4:00pm on Sunday.
A crime scene has been established on the top floor of the eight-storey building.
Investigators in plastic suits and masks have been removing evidence from an apartment throughout the morning.
A coroner's van remained at the scene this morning waiting to remove the bodies.
It is understood the second body was not discovered until some time after the first.
A small red SUV was towed away from the scene this morning.
A second car, a dark coloured sedan, was also later towed from the property under police supervision.
Neighbour shocked
Neighbour Colin Adams was sitting outside his nearby home when he heard yelling, screaming and shouting which sounded like people arguing.
Mr Adams said the commotion lasted about 10 minutes.
"Then we saw the police arrive, about 15 police cars and two ambulances, and then we saw the paramedics go upstairs and then come back downstairs and we figured it was something serious," he said.
"I'm very shocked and sad, it's just a numb feeling really, especially when something like this happens in your own street."
Mr Adams said it came as even more of a surprise given most people were having a quiet long weekend due to coronavirus restrictions.
"You don't expect to things like this to happen when we're in a situation like we are at the moment, it's supposed to be a quiet time," he said.
Commissioner Dawson urged anyone with information about the deaths to contact police.
"Anyone that's seen anything in and around Leonard Street [in] Victoria Park over the last 24 hours or so, we just want any information," he said.
"It doesn't matter how small you think it might be, whether it's persons, vehicles, whatever it might be, noises, we'd just like you to make contact with us."
